Many ambitious businesses and entrepreneurs still believe that having a great business idea is the only factor to a company’s success in today’s competitive and volatile business climate when, in reality, it’s only partially true. You also need to be constantly reinventing and testing your business models on a regular basis to see which ones are viable and gain significant traction for your offerings. If you don’t, you’ll soon become obsolete.

There are approximately 1.35 million tech-related startups worldwide, with 70,000 startups in the United States this year alone, ranging from artificial intelligence and blockchain to metaverse and gaming; chances are, an increasing number of competitors will be out to disrupt your current business model.

This isn’t anything new, remember Vine? It was a short-lived but beloved video-making app, that was killed by social media platforms that incorporated video editing as part of their business model. What about Pebble? The smartwatch was valued at $740 million in 2015 when apple was focused on iPhones and iPods, but it went out of business the following year when Apple released its own smartwatch. Pebble suddenly failed to compete and was acquired by FitBit for less than $40 million.

Focusing on innovation is essential for long-term success, but if you only focus on innovation you won’t make it in the short term. Likewise, if you only focus on managing your existing business model you won’t survive in the long term. Most leaders prioritize managing their existing business over inventing new business models to generate additional streams of revenue, but in order to weather unforeseen market shifts and competitors that are increasingly working in stealth, today’s leaders must do both.

While it’s important to be aware of these competitors, don’t let them intimidate you. So stay focused on what’s important, continue to innovate, evolve, and keep testing new business models for viability, and you’ll stay one step ahead of the competition.
