Proof of Attendance Protocol or “POAP”
Proof of Attendance Protocol or “POAP” for short has grown at a phenomenal rate! It has emerged as a powerful, inspiring new approach to keeping a permanent record of both virtual and in-person events.
The establishment of gated communities, where social status and an ultra-selective admissions process will play a key role, is one of POAPs multiple use cases. Consider industry events: an attendee who attends 20 of them and participates in numerous panel discussions earns POAP badges that serve as social proof of their interest and expertise; these POAPs might also record the attendee’s qualifications and resume. Event planners may then utilize the POAPs to verify and filter out highly engaged participants, rewarding them by inviting them to participate in future events as guest speakers.
The possibilities for POAPs are unlimited, but we must be careful not to encourage people to try to rig the system by simply attending in-person or virtually using different accounts and farming badges. We must also be extra vigilant not to build a social credit system with POAPs by accident, but rather a fair and engaging gamification experience to encourage participation and loyalty.
