The Startup Acquisition Bandwagon
Acquiring Web3, XR, Blockchain, and Metaverse startups can help large companies scale their business faster. There are three reasons behind this:
1) Startups are becoming more mature and the investors are getting more sophisticated.
2) They are looking for startups who can provide them not just with financial returns, but also with brand value and a new customer base.
3) Large corporations are acquiring more startups, but not always for the benefit of the startups. They are interested in cutting-edge technology as well as the talent that startups attract and hire.
Despite all of the benefits, large corporations are finding it increasingly difficult to acquire emerging tech startups for their products and services. It is due to the fact that startups nowadays are more agile, require less capital to grow, attract more customers, and have better technology and business models. Additionally, startups have the upper hand at the negotiation table. They have established revenue and profits, which are more attractive to investors seeking equity and to potential partners.
While some startups are notoriously difficult to value accurately due to a lack of operating income or even a monetizable product, they have a well-thought-out plan to reach an IPO in a reasonable time frame. Most investors understand that the company’s current market valuation does not accurately reflect its true future potential to generate 10-100X sales, profits, and return on investment.
Furthermore, startup founders have established a reputation in the market and, in most cases, are more interested in receiving funding from venture capitalists and angel investors to remain independent. Startup founders are able to pivot quickly to stay ahead of the curve. This could mean anything from whether it’s time to transition out of their businesses or what changes need to be made in order to ensure success. Startups with founders who are willing to give up control and ownership are more likely to get acquired for a higher price later down the road, indicating that they trust their team and know when it’s time to take a step back and exit to get an adequate return.
