How incorporating culture can keep growth strategies from sizzling out

Most growth strategies fail to gain traction and deliver on their promises. The problem gets even more complicated when you ask the question: What does a successful growth strategy actually look like? How can you ensure that the strategy is carried out and implemented effectively?

The challenge is compounded by the fact that there’s not a one-size-fits-all approach to growth – what works for one company may not work for another.

At its core, a growth strategy outlines the steps needed to achieve desired objectives, such as expanding market share, increasing revenue, and growing customer base. This means that it should include activities such as developing a product offering and pricing strategy, conducting market research, creating a brand identity, and engaging in marketing activities.

But beyond the core activities, strategies and tactics to be implemented, a successful growth strategy should also incorporate elements of underlying culture that will enable the growth strategy to become operational and quickly gain traction.

The culture of the business is an important factor when it comes to creating an “operational growth strategy”. The culture of the business should be aligned with the growth strategy so that employees are motivated to carry out the strategy. This means having a shared sense of purpose, clear objectives, and a sense of ownership.

To do this, communication must be at the center of the strategy. All stakeholders should be involved in the strategy’s development and execution, from the top down to the front lines.

Leaders must also be willing to take risks, challenge the status quo, and be open to feedback and criticism. This will create an atmosphere where employees feel comfortable speaking up and offering their input. Additionally, leaders should create opportunities for employees to grow and develop, such as providing training, offering feedback, and incentivizing growth!

It is also important that there is a system in place to measure and evaluate the success of the growth strategy. Companies should use both quantitative and qualitative metrics to track the progress of the strategy and how it is impacting the overall success of the organization.

With the right mix of skills, processes, culture, and a commitment to the strategic direction your growth strategy will be operational, successful, and help your business thrive.
